In-Depth Review

A necklace made of carnelian. A ring with several garnets. Earrings with bright rubies. For thousands of years people have used gems, stones, and metals for adornment. But that’s not all. They’ve also been used for a variety of magical purposes. Scott Cunningham reveals all of those magical uses in Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem & Metal Magic.

The book begins with an introduction to magic, the magical powers of stones, colors, shapes, and how to obtain and spiritual cleanse the stones. Then Scott shows you how to find the stories that stones carry.
“It’s best to get to know stones before using them in magic. Becoming familiar with them allows you to work with their powers ? Meditate on ten or so stones to begin with, and add more later as they come into your life ? When a situation requiring a magical rite occurs, you’ll know the stone to use.”

The book includes full information on how to do all of this.

One of the unique features in this book is the section on using stones for divination. Sure, most people are used to hearing about crystal gazing, but you can use stones other than quartz crystal.
“Flat, square pieces of obsidian were favored in ancient Mexico and beryl spheres or eggs were the stones of choice during the Renaissance.”

You’ll learn how to use fifty stones to do simple divination, and how to use different colored stones for answering questions. Perhaps most interesting is Scott’s original stone Tarot. He uses agate for the Fool, diamond for Strength, and carnelian for Justice. There are stones given for the entire major arcana, so with practice you can do a great divination. In fact, the book includes two spreads for doing stone Tarot divinations.

Next, the book goes into how jewelry can be used for magic and goes on to give several spells using stones that you can use as models for your own magical work.

Then comes the major part of the book, a complete analysis of the magical powers of stones from “A” (agate) to “Z” (zircon). For example, apache tear can be used for protection and luck. Citrine can be used to enhance psychic powers, for protection, and to prevent nightmares. Ruby is good for such things as wealth, protection, power, and joy. You’ll also learn folk names for the stones, types of energy they have, elements with which they are associated, and much more.

And there are over twenty-five full-color photos showing what over sixty different stones look like so you can easily identify them. And this jam-packed book has even more! The next section covers the magical powers of metals from antimony to tin. Copper is good for directing energy, lead is good for divination and protection, and pyrite is good for magic concerning money, divination, and luck. Other metals are included, too.

There is no way a brief article like this can come close to covering all of the features in this book. But if you want to know the power of crystals, gems, and metals, this book is the ultimate resource.
